Last July, to celebrate his new Virtual Choir 6, Eric Whitacre picked six of his favorite virtual choir performances. “Be Still My Soul” composed by the gifted Ily Matthew Maniano and performed by the Philippine Madrigal Singers Alumni was one of the videos selected. As stated in the video notes “This virtual CHOIRAantine and social distanSING couldn’t have been better without you.”
The video was dedicated to all those affected by the pandemic: front-line workers, family, friends, and loved ones who’ve passed. One year later we are still facing new variants of Covid 19 in our communities, and the lyrics of “Be Still My Soul” remind us that we are not facing this alone, that the Source of Life is by our side. The soaring melody and lush harmonies comfort and transport me.
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side
In every change, He faithful will remain
Thy God will undertake
To guide the future as He has the past
Be still, my soul (x3)
Be still, my soul: (x2) the Lord is on thy side
Be still, my soul
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul (x3)
Be still, my soul (x2) the Lord is on thy side
Be still (x8)
Be still, my soul
